COMIC MARKET ALERT!!

THIS IS NOT A DRILL OR TEST.

Greeting and salutations comic cadets! Who and Ted here with the first of many Comic Market Alerts! It’s been awhile so we’ll take a quick second to acknowloedge this is not only the first CMA of 2021 but the first alert in over a year! Luckily we were able to find a home again here on Octotaku so let’s cut the pleasantries and get to business.

Marvelites around the world have all been fixated on WandaVision and MCU’s latest masterpiece has comic collectors scrambling every week for new keys being crowned. This week saw a major storyline explained and a new character that has been floating around as a rumor until she was confirmed today.

SPOILER ALERT

Throughout the series the lovable and intruding neighbor Agnes has been mostly a background character and an afterthought but in the last few episodes she has gotten more of the spotlight. In the latest episode 7, “Breaking the Fourth Wall” the show takes on 2000s television and mimics the interview style sitcoms that were popularized by shows like the Office and Modern Family. By the end a major clue as to whose been behind the Maximoff anomaly was revealed and Agnes went from annoying neighbor to Agatha, the wicked witch of Westview. In a quick twist it is revealed that Wanda is not the only magic wielder and Agatha Harkness a powerful sorceress is behind all of the episodes even using her powers to trick Vision.

Keen eye Marvelites may have guessed this would be the path taken with the Halloween episode dressing Agnes up in a witch costume. What seems tongue in cheek at the time turned out the be a huge hint of what’s to come.

Agatha Harkness first appears in Fantastic Four (1961) #94 and the comic has already seen a huge leap in price. The comic got a nice bump when Kathryn Hahn was revealed to be playing a character named Agnes and comic sleuths and speculators went to work. Few got the jump and were able to get decent copies at a low price and those that didn’t are going to find that getting a copy now is going to be quite difficult as VG/FN RAW’s are now selling near and over $100. Fans seem to be putting their money on Hahn’s popularity and the characters deep history throughout Marvel Comics.

Try to scoop it cheap as you can in an auction but I caution paying more that $200 for anything under high grade. Remember how Marvel treats their villains and even if Hahn’s gives a great interpretation what are the chances her character survives beyond the series or worse is superseded by another major player that is rumored by Bettany to still not have appeared? You may pay a high price now only to find the price drops after the series ends in a few weeks. We don’t know if there will even be a Season 2 or if Hahn will show up in enough future properties to keep the comic’s price afloat. If you have a copy now may be the time to part with it as the comic has scorched eBay and set it ablaze. There is a lot of wait and see but don’t feel bad if you ultimately decide to keep it or part ways.
